So a transporter really should be more of a one person jump drive... this is why you wouldn't need a pad on the surface. You latch anto the quantom foam at the surface and bud the person off the ship and through the hole at the surface you entangle with a beam coming down from the ship. Mini wormhole. In one ST:TNG episode such a teleporter was used that seemed to cause genetic damage, although that would seem to apply more to the standard trasporter approach, although that allows you to remove viruses, and to render weapons harmless in transport--a useful capability.

the transporter could work more like a personal warp tunnel... ; )

you'd only have to rewrite a few scenes in TOS to retcon a new concept -- TNG would be a bit hairier... VOY would be problematical of course [ but it's Voyager... it needs some pruning ]

yep, i remember watching that TNG episode and realizing they should've switched everything the other way... ; )

If you have to recon it, then you have missed the point.

What I imagine, is bit different. I see something the generates a subspace field around the subject, and transmits that portion of the subject to the desired coordinates. Quantum Foam??? Too small a scale.

So jut how small? How small can you cut up a single cell, and reassemble it? Think in terms of Information theory.

subspace tunneling is just so kewl, dude... ; )

but John Dalmas had an interesting take on teleport technology in either The Reality Matrix, or The Regiment series...

I guess having a cascade effect with a beam emerging at a character's head hight heading down to the ground interface, will allow the standard beaming, with a bubble-jump being so sudden that perhaps a burst of radiation causes more harm than actually being disassembled, but keeping certain relationships intact, allowing for folks to talk while being beamed in the movies...
