In the original FRS, I wrote a report on one of the transports, and noted how the cost of shipping some items was collapsing in the face of pattern transmission i.e. subspace messages containing the patterns for some substances and objects, constituted at the destination. To me it seemed that subspace communications + transporter/replicator technology would lead to a collapse in transport of goods with sufficiently simple/short patterns to "mail".

It would give a ehole new meaning to "mail order". ;)

Yes, I remember that.

Do you have any idea at all, how much data compression could be done? In the transmission, of course...

To create a ham sandwich of a new type, the computer at the receiving end, just has to have a very large library of possiblities.

However something truely new wouldn't be able to transmitted by summary. But only by standard data compression.

But this leads to other possiblities.

A star ship is out on the outer marches. It recieves instructions for a new version of a LN-64A-123 - the 123third version change.

Immediately, the computer starts to examine the new features. A report is generated to both the Chief Engineer, and the command staff(Captain, First, Chief Maintainance, and so on). It is decided that since the resources are present, and that the alert status, has no, 'no goes', the upgrade is done. Total time, to allow for power/fuel use is several minutes...

not to mention the sheer madcap whimsy of 'pattern corruption errors'...

smuggling = sneakernet... ; )

Control of such sugguled goods would be impossible.

As soon as it would be possible, commercial enterprises would be formed. But interstellar flight would have to have already been for some time.

In other words the R&D would have to have been almost completed.

By why commercial? They would be the ones to find the best way for interstellar trade. They are the ones to experiment with new desings for interstellar trade.

Before them, it would be government run(and ruined) colonization atempts.

Ruined?

Yes ruined. Governments aren't too smart at trade.

or much of anything ELSE, either...

maybe we should be grateful they're only as smart as they are, if they should ever develop TRUE intelligence... the horror...

I think it has happenend from time to time. A little guy in the late 1700's/early 1800's.

Another in the period from around 1928-1945 who was a soldier in WW I, who was one of history's greatest monsters(13.2 million dead). He had another friend of his to the East, who was an even greater monster(28 million dead).

No it is better to be humble.

And before I forget - Alexander the Great, Attia the Hun, Genghis Khan, and others.

heh, heh... no problem... : )

- it's an embarrassment of riches ~ "so many wankers, so little time..."

hmm... do you think that the quasi-utopian era of Trek will be more [or less] vulnerable to sudden manipulative demagogues ??

and would the other major races have had the historical exposure that our world has been *cough* blessed with ?
