Today is the fiftieth anniversary of Star Trek, first broadcast this day in 1966. To commemorate, Federation Reference will be sharing its first publication since the 1980s! These will be made available as digital downloads of new, original pages in the old school style of Franz Joseph Schnaubelt's classic Star Fleet Technical Manual. The downloads will cover the ships mentioned and shown in the various episodes and will be made available on the fiftieth anniversary of the respective episode. Not all episodes featured ships and when that is the case, either no page will be made available or there will be a surprise.

This week we celebrate THE MAN TRAP, and the download features the series version of the 11-foot filming model of the starship Enterprise. Assuming everything works, the image below is a jpeg file.

This process will hopefully get a bit more streamlined as it moves along.

Now, how might a Star Fleet Technical Manual page featuring the Enterprise have looked? Not the way Franz portrayed it, since his version of the iconic heavy cruiser was quite different from what was seen in THE MAN TRAP.

I am trying out an experimental download for the same jpeg file that may eventually be used for PDFs:

Enjoy! And Happy 50th! Coming up next Thursday on the 50th anniversary of its first broadcast on September 15, 1966 - CHARLIE X.

Here is a reworking of the file to evoke this Jefferies screen display:

September 22, 1966: WHERE NO MAN HAS GONE BEFORE. First, the lost Earthship Valiant:

And all that is left of her, the recovered recorder:

And, Enterprise herself, in her second pilot configuration:

And the ore ship that visits Delta Vega every twenty years. Based on Todd Gienther's take on the TAS robot drone.

September 29, 1966 - "The Naked Time" No new ships this episode. But I came up with one by... extrapolation.

Image

The idea being, this is a TOS-friendly version of the ship seen in TNG's remake of this episode.

October 6, 2016 was the 50th anniversary of the first broadcast of "The Enemy Within". There are no ships introduced in this episode, so we will instead have a look at NCC-751, U.S.S. Oxford, ex-Navangar. Decommissioned in 2230, inaccurately recorded as scrapped in 2231, refit, renamed and recommissioned along with several other Caracal-class cruisers during the Four Years War as a corvette. Maintained in service after the war until 2261 to patrol Klingon borderspace until the patrol combatant force could be expanded.

And by the way, it was the first command of the featured character in this episode.

Stardate 1329.8. October 13, 1966. The premier broadcast of "Mudd's Women".

The starship Enterprise is chasing a "small class J cargo vessel" with its registration beam silenced. Here she is.

Image

This is based on Okuda's TOS-R design, but not a single line is the same. That model was awkward and derivative and not something Matt Jefferies would have allowed on the air. Certainly not in the first season. So I took it's presumed basis - Jefferies original shuttlecraft design - and used its aesthetics to inform this reworking. Its registration markings have been blanked out, but not its distinctive personalized graphics.

It carries six of the standard containers outboard and tucked under the engineering section, but accessible to the cargo hold through the front containers. It also has space for uncontainered cargo in the hold at the lower bow section, which is accessible from the exterior through the bow doors. The control and habitat portions of the ship are on the upper deck, forward.

This is my idea of a TOS Serenity. Though she is named, somewhat more preposterously, King Harry.

Stardate 2712.4. October 20, 2016 is the fiftieth anniversary of "What Are Little Girls Made Of?" The tragic story of Doctor Roger Korby mentions two expeditions sent over the course of the previous five years to check on the Korby Expedition after communications were lost. Exo III was a frontier planet beyond the reach of any but the few ships capable of extended starflight. Those ships and the ship that brought Korby and his team to Exo III are what we will be seeing this week.

"Miri" - Stardate 2713.5
On October 27, 1966, We were introduced to the tale of another Earth, a "Neverworld" where children never grow up. Or more precisely, take a very long time to grow up, and only do so with horrendous results.

"I've already contacted Space Central," says Kirk. "They will send teachers, advisers..."
"And truant officers, I presume," McCoy quips.
"They'll be all right."

They will be all right, because the Federation Health Service and member planets send a relief mission composed of a dozen ships like this (and numerous smaller support transports and tugs). U.S.S. Sakuro, pictured here, is an old transport, refit as a heavy hospital ship (Hippocrates-class) capable of carrying two large personnel containers outfit for disaster relief or any number of other support tasks.

Starlet 2715.1 - November 03, 1966 is the premiere of "Dagger of the Mind" and to celebrate, here is the Starfleet "prison ship" USS Benevolence. In Gene Roddenberry's 23rd century, criminal behavior is a medical problem, as is all antisocial behavior. (As an individualist, I can see a lot of interesting stories in that scenario. ) Benevolence is a hospital ship carrying a small transport container outfit to carry priso... I mean "patients". It is a close relative of the four-nacelled Sakuro from last episode. Benevolence is refit from an early 23rd century patrol ship, in contrast to the transport from which Sakuro was refit. It is a "fast" hospital ship - not capable of throwing a warp field around a large container, but capable of a higher warp. Presumably the four-nacelled Hippocrates class hospital ships could achieve similar warps if limited to the small half-containers and when using two nacelles at a time.
