Thursday, February 2, 1967. Bolivia approves its new constitution. President Johnson holds a press conference that primarily focuses on the United States’ interaction with communist regimes, including North Vietnam and the U.S.S.R. In another press conference, in New York, California lawyer Gary Davidson announces the formation of the 10-team American Basketball Association to compete with the 10-team NBA.

And NBC puts Captain Kirk in hot water when it airs the twentieth episode of Star Trek, "Court Martial":

Quote:
Captain's Log, Stardate 2948.5. Starship Enterprise remains in orbit around Starbase Eleven. Full repairs in progress. I've been ordered to stand by on Starbase Eleven until the inquiry into the death of Lieutenant Commander Finney can be conducted. I'm confident of the outcome.

COMPUTER: Recording inquiry. Matter. Captain Kirk, James T. Subject. Circumstances of death, Lieutenant Commander Finney, Benjamin.
COMMODORE STONE: This inquiry, to determine whether a general court-martial should be convened against Captain Kirk on charges of perjury and culpable negligence.
CAPTAIN KIRK: Ready.
COMMODORE STONE: Let us begin with your relationship with Commander Finney. You knew him for a long time, didn't you?
CAPTAIN KIRK: Yes. He was an instructor at the Academy when I was a midshipman, but that didn't stand in the way of our beginning a close friendship. His daughter Jamie, who was here last night, was named after me.
COMMODORE STONE: It's common knowledge that something happened to your friendship.
CAPTAIN KIRK: It's no secret. We were assigned to the same ship some years later. I relieved him on watch once and found a circuit open to the atomic matter piles that should've been closed. Another five minutes, it could have blown up the ship.
COMPUTER: Ship nomenclature. Specify.
CAPTAIN KIRK: United Star Ship Republic, number 1371.
COMMODORE STONE: Continue.
CAPTAIN KIRK: I closed the switch and logged the incident. He drew a reprimand and was sent to the bottom of the promotion list.

February 9, 1967 "The Return of the Archons"

"Captain's Log, Stardate 3156.2. While orbiting planet Beta III, trying to find some trace of the starship Archon that disappeared here a hundred years ago, a search party consisting of two Enterprise officers were sent to the planet below..."

The Council-class cruiser Archon, NCC-189, launched 2165. Adapted from the quite similar Raijin-class warship design but given a secondary hull to permit extended missions. Its wreckage was discovered by Enterprise on Beta III a century after being lost in 2167.

Thursday, March 23, 1967: The Jimi Hendrix Experience performs at the Guild Hall in Southampton, UK. NASA freezes the Apollo program in the wake of the Apollo 1 fire. On CBS, Ursula Andress, Rod Steiger and Carol Burnett appear with regular Arthur Treacher on the Merv Griffin Show. And NBC introduces the world to Klingons on the 26th episode of Star Trek, "Errand of Mercy".

This is Kor's flagship, I.K.S. Kivord, named for the Thought Admiral credited with defeating the Lyran fleet in the First Battle of Heretekes:

Quote:
Captain's log, stardate 3198.4. We have reached Organia and established standard orbit. No signs of hostile activities in this area.

UHURA: Captain. Unit XY-75847 report a fleet of Klingon ships in their sector, sir.
KIRK: What bearing?
UHURA: Unable to ascertain, sir.
KIRK: Mister Sulu, have the phaser crews stand by their positions. Full power deflector screens.
SULU: Yes, sir.
KIRK: Mister Spock and I are going to the planet's surface. You will be in command. Your responsibility is to the Enterprise, not to us. Is that clear?
SULU: Perfectly, sir.
KIRK: The Klingon fleet is in this quadrant. We know that Organia will be a target. If they should emerge
SULU: We'll handle them, sir.
KIRK: You will evaluate the situation. If there is a fleet of them, you'll get out of here, Mister Sulu.
SULU: But, Captain
KIRK: No buts. You'll get to safety and alert our fleet. You will not attack alone.

"Errand of Mercy", continued. The Klingon fast cruiser I.K.S. Cha'Blk (roughly, The Afterlife's Entry):

Quote:
SULU: Captain, the automatic deflector screen just popped on. Body approaching.
KIRK: Configuration, Mister Sulu.
(Everyone is thrown about as the Enterprise is hit by disrupter fire.)
KIRK: Phaser banks, lock on. Return fire. Maintain firing rate. One hundred percent dispersal pattern.
SPOCK: We've hit him, Captain. He's hurt.
KIRK: Damage control, report to the first officer.
SULU: Captain, the other ship doesn't register. Only drifting debris. We got him.
KIRK: All hands, maintain general alert. Hold battle stations. Damage report, Mister Spock.
SPOCK: Minor, Captain. We were most fortunate. Blast damage in decks ten and eleven, minor buckling in the antimatter pods, casualties very light.
KIRK: Maintain surveillance, Mister Sulu
.

"Errand of Mercy", continued. The Klingon fleet fueler Hasparath (named for an indigenous Kazhan beast of burden). It uses large ram scoops on the front of its graf units to collect matter and energy both to replenish its own stores and to top off any of its carried fuel that may have been lost or consumed. It does this for obvious reasons of efficiency but also because of the tremendous power needed to take maximum advantage of the huge gravity well created by the hyperdense neutronic fuel.

Hasparath also carries 300 troops in stasis.

In 1983, I published a similar design to this as a Klingon fleet fueler adapted as a merchant neutronic fuel carrier - the SS Kobayashi Maru. Although at least one Pocket Books novel used the design as the basis for its conjectures, the general consensus of fans has steered to the much more conventional, Roger Sorensen design, particularly after that was used as the basis for John Eaves' work on the Abrams movie. As such I have felt free to depart somewhat in the sizing of this ship from the original plans in order to better bring it into accord with the other Klingon ships being presented for this episode. (Those plans were based on the size parameters stated onscreen in "The Wrath of Khan" and always struck me as bigger than I would have liked to size this ship.)

"Errand of Mercy" - Kor's Klingon invasion force, just about done. Here is the landing cruiser, based closely on one of Matt Jefferies' sketches. Two would be included in the invasion- I.K.S. HoH'SuS (Killer Wind) and HoH Yu'Egh (Killer Wave). In his sketch, Jefferies indicated landing skids where the upper and lower pylon meet. I have designed this so it supports itself there and on the underside of its "head". It has an access ramp under the junction between the engineering hull and access boom, where star divers could jump out from orbit or troopers could dismbark from the landed ship, protected by the guns of the primary hull.

"Errand of Mercy", battle of the fleets. Now turn to the Starfleet, this is the Surya-class U.S.S. Avenger, NCC-1860. A "class one ship of the line", it forms part of the backbone of the Starfleet interdiction force alongside the heavy cruiser Enterprise and other heavy frigates.
