Or, with advances in education including possible interfacing between artificial and organic minds, education (and reeducation) might be much easier than today. Again, this kind of thing was shown in TOS after Uhura's run in with Nomad, McCoy's upload of the knowledge needed to replace Spock's brain, and the several instances of mind-body transfer. It would be unreasonable to assume these contacts would not result in improvements in education, even if one were to assume untold numbers of such contacts in the centuries prior to TOS hadn't done so.

As for newly enlisted crewmen not having the training to handle new technology, wouldn't that be the point of enlisting them? To have a constant stream of enlisted going through training for the current technology, and to be able to increase that number as needed? I agree there would be a gap in time during which the ships, being prepared with the new technology, would be awaiting the enlisted, being prepared to handle the new technology. Perhaps ninety days, like ensigns fresh from college during WW2. Ninety days during which mothballed hulls would be plugged with the latest technology and newly enlisted crew would be trained using 23rd century methods of direct-to-brain education to handle that technology.

It might take even longer than that. The tech used by guest starring aliens--the Kelvin devices, the belt equipment, etc. looks to be something that was never figured out--the Tantalus device comes to mind.

Just having the device the girls on Spock's Brain used to knock out a whole crew from within..good grief.

I always figured by TMP there were countermeasures used against all this tech--even if it wasn't actually duplicated.

Thought this line was kind of interesting:

Today, advancements in computer technology and capabilities of personal computers also have drawn fans to “recreate” and continue classic episodes of the original series, such as the “Star Trek Continues” web series, of which Kerr also has provided technical consultation.

“In early September of 2013 I started drawing plans of the hangar bay,” he said. “The graphics artist used them to create a CGI model of the bay that appeared in a three-second shot in the episode ‘Lolani.’ The hangar bay will be featured more in later episodes.”

Sorry to be responding to a post so old, but I just found out this place was back, so here I am...

hmm... scaling & mission issues

would there be a Unified Spaceframe Standard to make modular ships/components at the planning & construction stages ??

"i'll take a class IV hull type B... Mod 4 warp reactor... with Series 14 nacelles... a MK 20 Bridge Module... block 8-A sensors..."

just how systematized is Federation/Starfleet procurement/production in different eras ??

when would the change from unique one-off prototype designs to limited production runs happen ?

when would considerations of using common & mostly modular component/section/systems/spaceframes -- of building 'big' fleets of mass-production style starships enter Fleet BuShips practice??

I make such an assumption sometimes when coming up with "backstory" for my ships. Saucers, secondary hulls, nacelles come in standard groups. Mind you I presume the insides of those standard hulls may different in details.

As for my overall design process...since I can't draw worth a crap freehand, and definitely not with a keyboard and mouse, I am limited to kitbashing 90-95% of the time. I have come up with a very few parts "scratch", but they're simple (nacelle pylons mostly). I am pretty good at revising existing parts from time to time (stretching out secondaries or changing their lines, for example).

I'm also a bit of a tinkerer. Like all the Connie variants I did back in the day when I was active as a designer. Change one or two bits here, augment detailing there, and call it a "refit" or "variant".

As for my "Engineering" philosophy, I have a loose set of standards based largely on "do I like it"? Does the design "feel" right. I hate "trikes". I'm not too fond of uni-nacelle jobs either, though a rare one gets a grudging pass if it's good enough.

As a rule (and because that's the part kit I had), I didn't do "speedboat" designs (Intrepid, Sovereign, etc). I understand the in-universe "treknobabble" explanations for them, but they just don't "do it" for me by and large..too "slick". I much prefer the stately grandeur of the Great Grey Ladies of the 23rd century.

I also ponder functionality. I've seen some very pretty stuff that just didn't make sense to me in terms of engineering, such as the fandom "Chariot" class and many of Atolm's Romulan ships. (Apologies to Atolm if he reads this, btw...)

Size is also important. The "lighter" the ship in terms of fleet role, the physically smaller I feel it should be. This may or may not fly in the face of real-world naval engineering, such as the fact that some frigates are smaller (physically) than destroyers that they out-gun.

That's my philosophy in a nutshell. Subject to change at my whim of course.

I love your larger secondary hulls--and was wondering what an Ariel type shuttlecarrier saucer would look like with one. I'd like to post an image if if it all right with Aridas and yourself.

I've been wanting to do something with the Balson secondary hull--and would like to post a new refit drawing here based on it. Asking first before I post.

If it's me you're asking, then have at it! :)
