After Tallguy suggested I sticky the nacelle evolution timeline I went to my notes and found some other stuff that might be of interest. An unfinished part of the 1701 cross section was the Nacelle Internal Diagram. I got it laid out but never finished it to the cross section's level of polish. But I did the call outs, and if you are willing to use a little imagination, they are both enlightening and fun:

Quote:
A. SPACETIME FIELD ACQUISITION
In this stage, ten microsingularities are coordinated and focused via gravity lenses and a gravitic mirror to positively warp the forward spacetime geometry. Hypergravity is further regulated by a conical Podkletnov shield separating the acquisition sphere from the rest of the nacelle

B. FUEL
Stacked ramscoops aft the acquisition stage collect matter drawn in by the microsingularities. The matter is condensed to a degenerate state for storage in the surrounding tanks. The degenerate matter is expanded as needed and one half converted to antimatter via tesseract. Matter and antimatter fuel the nacelle and shipboard reactors. Three magnatomic flux constrictors are arranged around the dorsal portion of the ramscoops to regulate matter intake.

C. PRIMARY STAGE
The primary stage reactor energizes the primary stage Casimir cavity that captures subspace negative energy to be used by the primary stage induction rings to negatively warp the surrounding spacetime geometry. This stabilizes the geometry sufficiently for warp entry. Work done by the negative energy induction rings results in heat that is dumped back into subspace by three magnatomic flux chillers.

A REACTOR CONTROL LOOP CONNECTS AND REGULATES THE PRIMARY AND POWER STAGE REACTORS.

D. POWER STAGE
The power stage reactor energizes a Casimir cavity that captures subspace negative energy to be used by the power stage induction rings. This offsets gravitic pressures created when the forward microsingularities amplify the positive warp of forward spacetime geometry, and permits acceleration from warp initialization to cruising speed.

E. MAIN STAGE
The main stage reactor energizes a Casimir cavity that captures negative energy to be used by the main stage induction rings. This offsets increased gravitic pressures created when the forward microsingularities further amplify the positive warp of forward spacetime geometry, and permits long term maintenance of cruising speed and short term acceleration bursts to emergency speeds.

Work done by the main and power stage negative energy induction rings results in heat that is dumped back into subspace by five magnatomic flux chillers.

F. FINAL STAGE
Two intercoolers connect the main stage reactor with two final stage magnatomic flux chillers that dump remaining heat from work done by the negative energy induction rings back into subspace.

G. RESTORATION
The restoration sphere is a simpler version of its acquisition counterpart at the other end of the nacelle. It restores aftward spacetime geometry to space normal conditions. This is accomplished via a microsingularity created by a laser activated plasmoid target and maintained by a trap reinforced by flux and gravitic lensing. The spherical lens contains dilithium vapor in which is suspended a gravitic mirror that amplifies the hypergravity pulse. The restoration dome is surrounded by a "cowl" made from over one hundred gravitic prisms in constant motion acting in unison as a final check on the proper restoration of the spacetime matrix.

<Stefon voice> For all those kids trying to figure out just how warp drive works, New York's hottest new club is "Cap'n I Canna Go". Located in the burned out remains of Gene Roddenberry's mother's aunt's neighbor's daughter's gym teacher, it was opened in 1966 by washed up Bill Shatner impersonator, "Fill Shatner". It has everything- phasers, lasers, tasers, masers, razors, a skunk dressed as Worf, Bjo Trimble's toboggan, a transhuman barf bag named "T'Odo"...
What's a transhuman barf bag, you ask? You know that thing, when you hang a midget from your captain's log... and he puts on a fez and paints his face copper and starts eating brightly colored cubes?

http://en.memory-alpha.org/wiki/Billy_Curtis#Modal

And you get this confused look on your face and say, "Zefram Cochrane dressed in an orange jumpsuit and had sex with a cloud? Whaaat???"</Stefon voice>

In other words, some blanks are left unfilled for the fun of the people on this forum to speculate about. A tried and true way of doing things learned from TOS and SotSF.

So 'specalate away, Lucy. ;)

Okay, you asked for it.

The biggest problem that I see with early warp drives is that they had no legs. That is, they couldn't operate for long before they would have to shut down, and repaired. Not preventive maintenance, repaired, out right. And up to the circumferential this was always true. This is why, the circumferential was such a big deal, before them cruising speeds were limited to warp one, and emergency speeds to warp three, as per the Heavy Cruiser Evolution Chart.

To put it another way, while previous ships could venture above warp one, doing so was a headache for them, with the result being very limited range, though this improved over time.

So, how does your speculation tie in with the list above? The thread is about the notes, not about speculation on the evolution of warp drive. Even though the notes are about that, try to tie your speculation in with what is there.

That's the way to play the game.

What might help me is to see these on diagrams of the nacelles or the call outs for these as a general rule or something to refer to.

I should point out that some of the names and details of the above have changed over time. I will try to post descriptions of each image tomorrow or Tuesday For now look at your URL code and you should in most cases find a name for whatever ship you see.

Thank you, now there is something to refer to and work with for future designs. :D
