I have been doing a rethink today.

Given: Nomad. What does the existence of Nomad mean? First of all, it means that they had AI back in the day(2002). Secondly it means that by the time the first ship equipped with space warp appeared, that AI had to be in extensive use - or does it?

So why the rethink? In an old encyclopedia on computers, it states that the very first control computers were minicomputers, that is, 16 bit word size. So what is to stop somebody from putting multiple independent logic computers onboard a ship? Not just for being redundant, but for the processing of data... Look at LANTRIN and the F-15E.... Which raises the question of purposes of the sensor domes on later ships.... LANTRIN for star ships anyone??? Look at the Horizon class....

So if you have independent Logic computers that are 16 bit in size, what happens? That is, at what point do you need to go to the next step? (Assume that the next step isn't 32 bit word size per se, but call it the Transtator). So what gives? What does this extension get you?

Was Nomad a true AI before it met Tan-Ru? Maybe, maybe not. I would suspect it was probably a limited form of AI. an expert system of sorts, designed to act within a set of parameters defined by it's function/mission. But probably not self-aware in any meaningful way.

Well what does the short story, by James Blish say? What does the episode say? Go from there. Then remember that, the primary problem with any part of the total, is that at best the story author, and short story author had limited understanding of what A. I. is.

It shows up in the term "Independent Logic". Why is this a problem? Because it is a general case, rather than a specific case. That is, it is a general purpose A. I., rather than, a special purpose A. I., or limited case A. I.

Now lets look at A. I. in the real world, where it has made its greatest advances is in computer game NPCs. That will surprise some, but that is where the greates advances have occurred because that is where the money is, right now. So what are the limitations of the NPCs? That is the real question. Some of the limitations are in how complex an environment that they can handle. So what has been happening since 2002? NPCs have been developed to handle more complex environments, with the final goal, of being able to have an environment, as complex as we handle. That is, human level.

But what would be going on in the Nomad probe of 2002? It depends upon how often it has to 'think'. The quicker events happen, the more it will have to change. But! here is the prime difference between TOS and us. We use soft ware, not hard ware. This use of hard ware, limits some things, but has the advantage of being much faster than a soft ware version of the same thing.
