What Chemistry teaches

Well, I don't think the teacher knew in Chemistry last night, but she described how a Phaser would work. What she was talking about, was ionization energies. Which is what a phaser does - ionize or 'disrupt'. It became clear that in this class, that a phaser can't be oof one frequency. What it has to be doing, in any realistic sense, is going up in frequencies, to disrupt(remove) the electrons, in particular the valence electrons. This is the target. Removing the valence electrons. Not, a body, or device or thing, but the electrons that bind the whole thing together.

But why shift the frequencies upward? Because of the amount of energy involved with the removal of the valence electrons. Think in terms of pitch, an ever rising tone, sweeping away the atomic bonds.

So how could this be done. Green lasers typically ionize material that they hit. So higher frequency lasers plus hight wattage lasers, could do what the phaser does. Which brings us to another thing.

Back in the 1960's, lasers operated in the red end of the visable light portion of the spectrum. But how to beat them? Well it may be that TPTB, had some sort of idea, based upon their discussions with those in the know, how something like their idea might be done, and so looked to higher frequencies of light...

Since green frquency lasers can knock eletrons lose, it follows, as one goes through the peroidic table that different frequencies of laser light will be better suited for for elements, than other frequencies would. That is, it may be possible to do things one hasn't thought of as of yet.

For example to stun someone, you could induce an electric charge accross their body or head...

But what happens if you go after the core elelctrons? In addition to the valence electrons? Aside from needing more wattage, what would happen? To put it another way, equations must be balanced, so the power consumption will be high regardless of what one does.

But getting back to the differences between a laser and a phaer, from the 1960's point of view, I don't think that thye saw their ideas as even possible. But for some things they might just be. Consider; ECM what does it do??? What is it supposed to do??? Attack an electronic target, is the simple answer, and electrons are electronic targets...

though there's also the possibility that phasers work on subspace physics and the final energy transfer is orders of magnitude more than expected... ; )

and wasn't there an article somewhere about phasers actually being psionic weapons... : O

I like this idea.

What I am thinking, is that it might be possible that Phasers just might be possible.

Going by what I have been reading since 2009, I have gotten the feeling, that there are hose who TOS far more realistically then we do. That is, they are ahead of in the search space. Keeping in mind as always that Sci-fi is intended to explore ideas ahead of their time. By doing this even before he internet, was around it would have been possible for some scientist, to give voice to an idea that he wouldn't dare directly publish. But by handing it off, perhaps that idea can be taken up by anothr, and taken to he next step.
